Gratitude exercise: Small Habits, Big Happiness by SIS Wellness Holidays

A gratitude exercise is a practice designed to cultivate feelings of gratitude and appreciation for the positive aspects of one’s life. Engaging in regular gratitude exercises has been linked to various mental health benefits, including improved mood, increased overall well-being, and reduced stress. Here’s a simple gratitude exercise that you can try:

Gratitude Journaling:

  • Set aside a few minutes each day, preferably in the morning or evening, for your gratitude exercise.
  • Get a notebook or use a digital platform to create a gratitude journal.
  • Write down three to five things you are grateful for on that particular day.
  • Be specific and focus on both big and small aspects of your life. They can be related to relationships, personal achievements, nature (the sun on your face, a bird singing) or even simple pleasures (a cup of tea or a warm bath).

Gratitude Letter:

  • Choose someone in your life whom you appreciate but may not have expressed gratitude to in a while.
  • Write a letter expressing your gratitude and detailing specific things you are thankful for regarding that person.
  • You can choose to send the letter or keep it for yourself.

Gratitude Jar:

  • Keep a jar and small pieces of paper near it.
  • Each day, write down one thing you are grateful for on a piece of paper and put it in the jar.
  • Over time, the jar will fill up with positive aspects of your life, and you can revisit these notes when you need a boost.

Mindful Gratitude:

  • Take a few minutes to sit quietly and focus on your breath to center yourself.
  • Bring to mind three things you are grateful for, savouring each one.
  • Engage your senses in reliving the experience, incorporating sights, sounds, smells, and feelings associated with those moments.

Gratitude Walk:

  • Take a walk in nature and pay attention to the environment around you.
  • As you walk, express gratitude for the beauty of nature, the ability to move, and the opportunity to be present in the moment.
